BA Performance students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts are looking forward to performing their latest production of ‘Nyrsys’.

The ‘Nyrsys’ show was originally staged by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru back in 2018 when they embarked on a national tour in collaboration with the Pontio Centre, Bangor. ‘Nyrsys’ gives an insight into the daily hustle and bustle of a hospital cancer ward in the Wales of today, with the script and songs compiled from interviews with real life nurses.

Originally written by Bethan Marlow, the production puts the experience of nurses on the stage – the challenges they face in their day-to-day work, and the mischievousness, sisterhood, and sense of vocation that sustains them. The production reflects a heartfelt image of the life and work of the heroes looking after us and our loved ones in a health system under permanent pressure.

Performances will be held in Cardiff at the Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts on the 13th of March at 12:30 and at 7pm, and then at Y Llwyfan in Carmarthen on the 15th of March at 12:30 and at 7pm.

The show will be directed by Ffion Dafis, and she is looking forward to working with the students:

“When I saw Nyrsys for the first time, I was hooked. It’s a warm, intense, and humorous drama celebrating the Health Service and the women working for it. I have enthusiastic, talented students eager to give it a new life. I cannot wait to work with them!”

The students are looking forward to performing this production. Gwenan Lloyd said:

“I feel so honoured to be part of such a powerful drama by Bethan Marlow, and I really cannot wait to start rehearsals next week with our experienced director Ffion Dafis. It will certainly be a challenge mentally but being in a nurse’s shoes on a cancer ward for the upcoming weeks will be an experience.”

Becky Timbrell added:

“I am really looking forward to working with Ffion Dafis and the cast to tell such a relevant story, which everyone can identify with.”

Fflur Llewelyn said:

“I can’t wait to start this rehearsal process. I can’t wait to begin the work with the incredible Ffion Dafis, it is going to be an experience and a half! I also can’t wait to get to do the show with the girls and for you to come and watch!”

Eilir Owen Griffiths, Director of the Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts said:

“I am extremely pleased that Ffion has agreed to come and direct this special show with our students. It’s a challenging drama, but with Ffion’s experience, I’m sure the students will receive first class training and create a memorable production.”
