Leading UWTSD academic elected as Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales
UWTSD’s Professor Lisa Isherwood has been elected as a Fellow of The Learned Society of Wales.
Lisa Isherwood is a Professor of Practice in Theology at University of Wales Trinity St David and Professor Emerita of Feminist Liberation Theologies, University of Winchester. She has had a significant impact on theology, particularly in promoting feminist and queer studies.
Her research, much translated, has led to the inclusion of these perspectives in conventional theology and has changed the way theology is taught and discussed internationally. Professor Isherwood has held leadership positions in various academic and professional organisations and collaborates with colleagues worldwide.
Election to the Fellowship is a public recognition of excellence, is keenly competed, and takes place following a rigorous examination of each nominee’s achievements in their relevant field. On hearing the news, Professor Lisa Isherwood, commented:
“I feel honoured to be elected as a Fellow of such a prestigious society and look forward to contributing to their work on diversity and many other projects.
“As a proud Welsh woman, the feeling of being recognised for my academic work by the Learned Society of Wales in this way ranks alongside the thrill I felt when I was selected to represent the Welsh national golf team internationally. I am extremely happy and look forward to meeting colleagues and engaging in fruitful conversations.”
This year, 41 new Fellows have been elected to the Learned Society of Wales. The new Fellows include academics from across Welsh and UK universities, writers, researchers and leaders from the world of higher education, as well as law, medicine and the media.
In the year in which the Society launched its new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion commitment, over 50% of the new Fellows are women.

“The range of specialisms is fascinating and the quality of the research exceptional. It demonstrates how many outstanding people Wales can boast, contributing their ideas, passion and expertise, deepening our research ecosystem and benefitting society in Wales and beyond.
“The Learned Society of Wales is little more than a decade old but we are playing a growing role in creating a productive and supportive environment for high-class research in Wales, while providing an informed voice in policy debates.
“I am delighted to welcome our new Fellows to the Society and look forward to their active involvement with us in the years ahead.”
The new Fellows bring the size of the Fellowship to 687.
