A new project being delivered by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is using research and knowledge transfer to enhance business capabilities to drive sustainable growth.

A young woman shakes her fists in the air in triumph; text reads: Funded by the UK Government; Levelling Up; Scale.

The Scale project, co-funded by the UK Government through the Shared Prosperity Fund, and administered by Swansea Council, will run throughout 2024, supporting Swansea-based enterprises entrepreneurs and graduates.

Scale will use University research and knowledge transfer expertise to support enterprises wishing to develop new products and services as well as to incorporate new technologies and processes.  This will be delivered through a series of business focussed workshops, scoping sessions and collaborative research and development (R&D) projects.

The project will utilise the skills and expertise of the University’s Assistive Technologies Innovation Centre (ATiC). ATiC collaborates with academic, public, private, and third sector partners from the life sciences, health, and social care sectors to drive a culture of research excellence, knowledge transfer, and innovation in health and wellbeing.

Dr Sean Jenkins, Research Director of ATiC said: “We are excited to be supporting the delivery of the SCALE project.  ATiC has a successful record of accomplishment of supporting collaborative research and development projects with businesses in the Life Sciences sector across Wales.  This project not only gives us the opportunity to use our extensive research capabilities to directly support this sector in Swansea; it also gives local businesses across other commercial sectors to take advantage of our unique research capabilities to support their growth and generate economic impact for our city region.”

In addition, Scale will also use University expertise to support aspiring entrepreneurs and start-ups through a launch pad and accelerator programme, designed to create new sustainable Swansea-based businesses.

Dylan Williams-Evans, Enterprise & Future Funds Executive Officer, UWTSD said: “We look forward to working with new and current entrepreneurs on a journey of growth and knowledge. Our Business Launchpad and Accelerator Courses are not just programs, they’re pathways to honing entrepreneurial skills, connecting with a community of like-minded individuals, and navigating the complexities of business in a supportive environment. The entrepreneurs will explore, learn, and build at their own pace with the support of the SCALE Enterprise Team and leading industry experts.”
