Maggie, who is based outside Washington, D.C was thrilled to discover UWTSD’s Engaged Anthropology online postgraduate course as it aligned perfectly with her passion for historic preservation and cultural heritage.

The programme’s flexibility enabled her to balance studies with employment, and she credits the accommodative teaching staff for bolstering her confidence in this academic venture.

Maggie leverages her anthropological insight now in her role as Lead News Editor for online entertainment publication, Collider, where the worlds of anthropology and entertainment entwine.

Her reviews and articles are underpinned by her understanding of human interactions and narratives, enhancing her skills as an entertainment critic.

Maggie said:

“In my job, I immerse myself in the worlds of film and television, connecting with the visionaries behind them, including actors, writers, and directors. I have found that studying anthropology has helped me look deeper into their work and has made me a far better critic, because fundamentally, anthropology is the study of people – our behaviours and social interactions - and that is the basis of all storytelling.”

As well as reviewing film and television, Maggie also interviews and steers discussion panels with actors and filmmakers, and has quizzed the likes of Ewan McGregor, ‘Game of Thrones’ star Maisie Williams, and ‘Harry Potter’ actors Jason Issacs and Matthew Lewis, to name just a few.

She said:

“When speaking with these creatives, I get a sense that they value the depth of analysis I apply to their work. They resonate and connect with the profound way I examine the narrative and characters of their projects, which leads to interviews that are not only fascinating but also richly engaging. So much of what I use is drawn from the knowledge I gained through my postgraduate degree.”

Beyond celebrity interactions through her day-job, Maggie’s creative spirit flourishes in her own writing. Her personal portfolio boasts an array of works, including short stories, poems and novels spanning genres ranging from science fiction and romance to the supernatural. Her screenwriting talents have been honoured at various film festivals including Big Apple Film Festival and Los Angeles International Film Festival.

Maggie said:

“There are so many doors out there open to different styles of storytelling and I’ve found writing in the media has brought me so much joy and opportunities. But an important message is that you don’t have to give up your hobbies, you can still pursue them on the side and work them in to your career, maybe even one day make it your sole career.”
