The BA Commercial Dance Programme from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts (WAVDA) has hosted a special event to celebrate dance in Wales.

A day of dance workshops was held at Haywood House, the home of WAVDA on the University’s Cardiff campus organised by the BA Commercial Dance programme. The ambition of the ‘Routes’ event was devised during a 2nd year module to promote the strength of dance in Wales, and to showcase the work of the Commercial Dance students at the university.

The event provided an experience for dance students at the Academy providing a taste of a day in the industry, working with renowned professional dancers and choreographers including Jesse Thornton, Dave Blaque, Gaia Cicolani, and UWTSD’s Commercial Dance Programme Manager, Tori Johns. Each artist brought a different style and approach to the event from which WAVDA students had the opportunity to learn.

Students found the event beneficial. Honey Boughey said:

“I had a great time exploring different styles such as Afrobeats. I left the sessions feeling strong and positive about my course. It was also really good to be part of the team organising the event”.

Student Kirstin Mills added:

“It gave me an insight into lots of different styles of dance and I very much enjoyed working with all the different professional dancers”.

UWTSD’S BA Commercial Dance Programme Manager Tori Johns said:

“It’s been exciting hosting Routes here at the Wales Academy of Voice & Dramatic Arts, an event devised and managed by our Level 5 Commercial Dance Students as a part of their course. It was an opportunity for us to celebrate Dance in Wales at WAVDA which currently runs the only Dance programme in the country. The students experienced an intensive day of workshops from industry professionals that all have connections to Wales, providing invaluable enrichment, training and experience.”
