On Sunday, (April 23) University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Lara Hopkinson, Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change programme Director, will join around 50,000 runners taking part in the London Marathon – a distance of 26.2 miles.

A tired but happy Lara Hopkinson proudly wears her Brighton Marathon medal, having just completed the race.

Lara is raising funds for the charity Mind, which provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem whilst also campaigning to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Lara said: “I’m running for Mind because, quite simply, #mentalhealthmatters! Running is my therapy and helps me to keep my own demons at bay. I hope that by supporting this charity, others will benefit from support too. I know just how vital their work is.”

It’s not the first time Lara has undertaken such an incredible sporting challenge. She previously ran the London Marathon in 2005 and just over two weeks ago completed the Brighton Marathon too.

Lara added: “I’ve been training when I can, either first in the morning or after teaching my students at the end of the day.

“I cannot wait to take part in Sunday’s event as I know how incredible the atmosphere is and how supportive all the people are who line the streets in support to cheer as you run past.

“Most people stay home and recover after a marathon, but after completing the Brighton event on April 2, I allowed myself a day or so of rest, then got back to training.”

Lara said she wanted to thank friends, family, and her colleagues at UWTSD for their support.

“I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me and donated to such a worthy cause,” she added.
